Molds are part of the natural environment. Outdoor molds play a part in nature by breaking down dead organic matter, but indoors mold growth should be avoided. Mold may begin growing indoors when mold spores land on surfaces that contain moisture. Molds have the potential to cause health problems. Molds produce allergens, irritants, and in some cases, potentially toxic substances. Health effects from exposures to molds indoor environments can result from allergy, infection, mucous membrane and sensory irritation and toxicity alone, or in combination. Research on mold and health effects is ongoing.
Is Sampling For Mold Needed? Yes! It is very important to sample mold before you begin the removal process in order to prevent the spread of potentially toxic mold spores. Surface sampling may be useful to determine if an area has been adequately cleaned or remediated. Sampling mold is an easy and inexpensive process Suspicion of Hidden Mold You may suspect hidden mold if a building smells moldy, but you cannot see the source, or if you know there has been water damage and residents are reporting health problems. Mold may be hidden in places such as the backside of dry wall, wallpaper, or paneling, the top side of ceiling tiles, the underside of carpets and pads, etc… Other possible locations of hidden mold include areas inside walls around pipes, the surface of walls behind furniture, inside ductwork, and in roof materials above ceiling tiles. Test Kit Information In addition to our radon analytical and manufacturing capabilities we have expanded our laboratory to include more indoor air quality products. We now offer a mold test kit. The mold kit includes the ability to run 9 tests, using 6 tape strips and 3 bulk sample bags. The kit includes an information card, tape strips, bulk sample bags, return mailer, and detailed instructions, along with a detailed final report outlining all mold spores present in sample and a debris count. Due to increased analytical costs we found the most cost effective way for the consumer to purchase a test kit was to have the individual pay for the analysis. Therefore, there is an additional $20.00 analysis fee per mold test. You have the ability to run 9 different samples at a cost of $20.00 for each sample totaling $180.00 if all tests are run. Note, not all of the tests have to be used, and you can use one kit for testing multiple houses/areas. You pay the initial price per kit of $9.95 at the time of purchase. The additional lab analysis fee is sent with the mold samples. |
